Major Events of 1918

1918 (Roman Numerals: MCMXVIII) was the 18th year of the 20th century. 1918 was not a leap year, and the first day of the year was a Tuesday.

1918 is the year that World War I finally ended in Europe with the defeat of the Central Powers. The tragedy of World War I was however soon followed by followed an Influenza pandemic ("Spanish Flu") which killed millions more around the world.

Soviets sign Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Central Powers.

Germans launch major offensives in France.

German Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates and later flees to the Netherlands.

Lithuania declares independence from both Russia and Germany.

Moscow becomes the capital of Soviet Russia.

First World War end at 11th hour of 11th day of 11th Month.

An Influenza pandemic ("Spanish Flu"), 1918-1919, kills 20-40 million worldwide.

Iceland becomes a self-governing kingdom but remains united with Denmark.

General Motors acquires Chevrolet Motor Company.

Serbia annexes Montenegro.

Britain merges the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service to establish the Royal Air Force (RAF).

Oregon places a 1 cent tax on gasonline. The first US state to do so.

British women over 30 gain the right to vote.

Second Polish Republic proclaimed.

Austria becomes a republic.
