Major Events of 1914

1914 (Roman Numerals: MCMXIV) was the 14th year of the 20th century. 1914 was not a leap year, and the first day of the year was a Thursday.

1914 is the year that World War I broke out in Europe after Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbian nationalists. Alliances and rigid military plans, meant that what began as a local conflict, eventually involved all the major European powers.
